6 Reasons Why People Get Stretch Marks

6 Reasons Why People Get Stretch MarksStretch marks, through its name, gives us a pretty good idea of what they are. Stretch marks are caused by the skin being put under strain and stretching too quickly, resulting in thin purple or red lines that fade to a silvery-white over time. Pregnancy is the most well known cause for stretch marks occurring, however there are also five other key factors that cause stretch marks, we discuss them in this article.

Why Do People Get Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are caused by sudden growth or weight gain, with the main drivers being:

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Puberty
  3. Bodybuilding/ weight training
  4. Genetics
  5. An underlying health condition
  6. Prolonged use of corticosteroid medication

It is common for people to get stretch marks as their body goes through changes during puberty. During pregnancy, the growth of the baby plus the hormones that a woman’s body releases to prepare for child birth impact the elasticity of the skin. Bodybuilders often see stretch marks on their shoulders, upper arms and back during rapid muscle growth. If you have a family history of stretch marks then you will be more susceptible. Health conditions such as Cushing’s Syndrome and prolonged or inappropriate use of corticosteroid medication will also increase your risk of stretch marks.

Where Do Stretch Marks Occur?

They can occur anywhere where the skin has been put under strain due to significant growth, however they are most common in areas of where fat is stored, including:

  • stomach
  • buttocks
  • thighs
  • breasts
  • upper arms

What Is The Best Treatment For Stretch Marks?

We offer two main treatments for stretch marks – Sublative™ Rejuvenation and Dermarolling. Sublative™ Rejuvenation is a fractional radio frequency treatment that delivers heat into the dermis, causing a heat controlled injury and promoting the skin to rapidly heal itself. This stimulation will cause the stretch mark in the dermis to begin its healing process again and can significantly fade them over time.

Dermarolling involves fine needles being rolled into the skin to cause a controlled injury to the dermis to promote the stretch mark to heal and renew itself. There is no heat involved with this treatment and the needle depth is different for each client. Both Sublative Rejuvenation and Dermarolling are great treatments for stretch marks and reduce the appearance significantly where visible results appear in as little as 3 treatments.
